Maid for Each Other by Lynn Painter
368 pages | Published by Berkley
The Set Up: Abi is a student juggling multiple jobs, one of which is professional cleaning. When her apartment complex has an infestation, she is left with nowhere to go, but she knows that Declan, the owner of the penthouse she cleans, is gone for the week. She discreetly spends the night but in the morning she wakes up to find his parents in the kitchen, who assume Abi is the girlfriend Declan has mentioned before. They insist that Dex should bring Abi along for his big shareholder weekend, so he has no option but to track her down and make a proposition: Pretend to date him for the weekend, and he’ll let her stay in his house for the week.
If there’s one thing Lynn Painter is going to do, it’s write a genuinely funny romantic comedy with A+ banter.
I thought the main character Abi was really likeable—she is self assured and determined, but able to make the most out of just about any circumstance. I thought the chemistry between Abi and Dex was pretty palpable right from the start.
“My brain can’t help but plagiarize Jane Austen when I look at you.”
Honestly, I have weird feelings about this kind of class difference romance, where a millionaire or billionaire is ready to throw money at their problems. So I appreciated that the ickiness of the situation was actually discussed in the book.
Overall this was a really light and fun read. The story was pretty fast paced and really focused, as Lynn Painter tends to do, the dialogue and banter. I wish there was a bit more plot to dive into, but if witty back and forth is your jam definitely pick up a Lynn Painter book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced eBook!
I’ve read a few Lynn Painter books and I’d like to read this one too. Happily Never After was a great read.
